The new Principal of Royal College, Colombo Mr. B.A. Abeyratne was welcomed by the RCPTA at the February Committee meeting held on the 13th February 2016 presided over by the President RCPTA Capt. M.N. Dharmaratne. Ex. Officio members of the RCPTA Mr. B. Suriarachchi and Mr. S. Kumarasinghe were present on the occasion.
In his welcome address Mr. B.Suriarachchi thanked the new Principal for agreeing to be present on the occasion. He spoke of the challenges faced by the Principal of Royal College which can be tenfold at present compared to the time of his tenue in office. He said that the school authorities , OBU , parents and staff will give 100% support as long as he proceed in the correct direction and he wished the new Principal a long stay at Royal College.
Mr. S.H.Kumarasinghe speaking on the occasion said Mr. Abeyratne has reached the highest position in the education field. He quoted a former Principal Mr. Bogoda Premaratne who has said ‘‘While you are in the chair keep your name unblemished’’. Mr. Kumarasinghe said that he was sure that Mr. Abeyratne has the capacity, integrity and experience to run a college as Royal College.
Both former Principals hoped that Mr. Abeyratne will work closely and give all possible support to the RCPTA.
Addressing the RCPTA committee the new Principal said that he was happy to be invited to be present on this occasion. Mr. Abeyratne said he started his school carrier at Manikdiwela Central College. He did a special degree in political science and wanted to join the police force as a SI .Later he was recruited as a Principal by the then Minister of Education Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe. Since then he has served as Principal of Kingswood College Kandy, Bandaranayake College Gampaha, Ananda College Colombo. After a short period of two weeks at Thurstan College Colombo, on the 18th of January he was called upon to take over Royal College Colombo. He said he hoped to work as a team with the RCPTA and appreciated the work done so far, having watched a presentation of the work undertaken by the RCPTA by our former general secretary Mr. Ranjith Senanayake. He said that he has a number of things with us in mind to mould character to face the global arena.
Our President Capt. Dharmaratne thanked the Principal for gracing the occasion and said that the RCPTA will not in any way interfere with the administration of the school and that we are a voluntary body functioning solely for the benefit of our members. Capt. Dharmaratne made it known to the new Principal about the donation the RCPTA offers ten grade six scholarship holders who are hostellers needing financial assistance. The treasurer Mr. H.G.P.Dharmadasa handed over the relevant cheque to the new Principal. Capt. Dharmaratne also presented the membership directory of the RCPTA and the newsletter to the new Principal.
