It was a great day for the members of the RCPTA as they embarked on a tour of whale watching off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This was the 26th March 2016
If not for the kind courtesy of our very own old boy the Navy commander Rear Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne this would not have been an easy task for the members of the RCPTA. Everything was arranged by the navy officers headed by Commander SanjeevaPremaratne to see that every member of the RCPTA was comfortable. The tour coordinator Mr. H.M.Dayaratne organized two buses which took us along the southern expressway to the Galle navy harbour. About 100 members took part in the tour.
We boarded the Princess of Lanka which is a ship belonging to the Sri Lanka Navy. It is frequently used to tour the southern seas looking out for Dolphins and Whales. The members of the RCPTA too had the privilege of boarding this vessel for a whale watching tour. We set out to the sea around 7.30am and gradually moved out to the sea about 7 km from land and from then onwards keeping that distance from the land we sailed along the shipping route towards the south of Sri Lanka.
On the way we were greeted by flocks of Dolphins who were frolicking in the sea. On and off we were able to see flying fish darting just above the surface of the waves as far as 500m or more. All the while we were unable to see a single whale. But the officers of the navy did not give up hope. We gradually moved towards as far as Dondra the southern tip of Sri Lanka. At last everyone shouted with joy as a single elusive whale appeared before us. Just like on land the news travels fast. We were able to see a lot of boats quickly moving towards this area. We are really thankful to the officers of the navy for taking every effort to see that we had the full satisfaction of the tour. We take our hats off to them. Thank you very much the Commander of the navy and his team.
It was time for lunch. The tour coordinators did an efficient job of organizing a delicious lunch at Southern Beach Hotel in Koggala. We are grateful to former Principal Mr. B.Suriarachchi for the assistance given in organizing the lunch at this hotel.
We returned to Colombo with happy memories of the whale watching tour.
